Five women, five children
Mrs. Eleanor Billimoria, Mrs. Suzy Rutz, Mrs. Trudi Mueller, Mrs. Girsperger and Mrs. Reynolds founded the school. Classes began three mornings a week in Mrs. Reynolds’ home.
Five women began West Wind for five children. Their idea was simple: give each child individual attention and a well-rounded beginning. Today, our nursery and kindergarten carries that spirit forward.
A place to grow together ♡
THE WEST WIND IDEA / 01
The founders wanted a pleasant environment in which children could be known individually and learn far beyond academics. The school continues to be a cooperative, non-profit institution devoted exclusively to the intellectual and emotional well-being of the child, with mothers playing a pivotal role in administration.
Dedicated teachers guide the educational work. Mothers help administer the school and build the community around it. This partnership has carried West Wind from its first living-room classes to its home in Gamdevi.

OUR HISTORY / 03

Mrs. Eleanor Billimoria, Mrs. Suzy Rutz, Mrs. Trudi Mueller, Mrs. Girsperger and Mrs. Reynolds founded the school. Classes began three mornings a week in Mrs. Reynolds’ home.
Growing interest led to a move into navy hutments on the grounds of Petit Hall, Nepean Sea Road. The school took the name West Wind, and Miss Roshan Curmally joined.
The constitution formalised West Wind as a co-operative, non-profit institution devoted to children’s intellectual and emotional well-being.
Principal from 1971 to 2011, Miss Curmally remained Principal Emeritus until April 2020. Mrs. Khushie Curmally has led the school since 2011.
After Walkeshwar in 1968 and Oomer Park at Breach Candy in 1989, West Wind moved to its present home in Gamdevi.
BEYOND THE ALPHABET / 04
West Wind combines early academic learning with music, movement, making and experiences beyond the classroom. The faculty’s dedication has kept this broad view of education alive across generations.

A SCHOOL THAT IS ALSO A COMMUNITY / 05
Mothers are responsible for the school’s non-educational administration. An executive committee oversees its affairs, with mothers taking charge of applications, archives, maintenance, supplies, events and the library.
Teachers lead learning. Families help make the school feel like a community, from the annual Fun Fair and Sports Day to celebrations, field trips and Graduation.
Explore the parents’ role ↗The Fun Fair brings our community together to give back. This annual fundraiser raises funds for the NGOs supported by West Wind School, turning a day of fun into support for their work.
Families cheer on the children at Sports Day. The school year closes with a Graduation ceremony in West Wind’s black and orange colours.
Visits to places such as the fire brigade, post office and bakery sit alongside the festivals celebrated by the West Wind community.

BEYOND THE SCHOOL DAY / 06
A lively space for children to keep exploring beyond the classroom. The Activity Hub brings together experiences that invite them to move, make, try something new and find their people.
